PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION REPORT
September 27,2007
Project: John’s Restaurant
Contact: Mr. John Gonzalez
INTRODUCTION
The Dan’s
Consulting Group has completed a preliminary investigation of the restaurant owner’s request of providing customized
software to enable internet access in the restaurant to better serve his customers and offset the newly added competition
in the plaza at an affordable costs. The owner claims he needs the added service to make his business more marketable;
and thus, give his restaurant the competitive edge and customer retention that it needs. This investigation was the result
of a request for new Information Systems Services completed by the owner of the restaurant, Mr. John Gonzalez.
SYSTEMS REQUEST SUMMARY
The main objective of this request is to stay in business, retain customers, and maximize
profits.
PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION FINDINGS
1. There is a new restaurant and a newly added strip of businesses that is
still under construction and may include a second restaurant in the near future.
2. Wireless internet access is becoming
a popular service in restaurants, clubs, pubs etc.
3. In today's competitive business arena, dramatic productivity
gains are increasingly rare. Mobile computing has emerged as a strong exception, bringing substantial increases in worker
productivity. And today's wireless technologies bring even greater productivity gains.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Mobile
technology-based laptops within a wireless LAN (WLAN) technology and the following specs:
Intel® Centrino® chipset
Wi-Fi
Protected Access (WPA) as a security choice.
WPA improves upon the older Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) security solution
for WLANs. WPA uses the Temporal Key Integrity Protocol (TKIP) for encrypting and "hacker-proofing" data streams, as well
as the IEEE 802.1X protocol. WPA2* supports the 802.11i for WLAN environments and provides new levels of authentication and
encryption.
DSl internet hosted by Comcast
TIME AND COST ESTIMATES
Intel® Centrino® mobile technology-based laptops enhance worker productivity, and they also
deliver other key benefits for growing businesses, including lower total cost of ownership (TCO).
Affordable technology,
low installation costs and inherent scalability combine to make wireless networking a sensible option for Mr. Gonzalez’s
small businesses and tight budget.
We estimate that one day will be required to perform a full system analysis. The following is an estimate of the costs
for performing the systems analysis:
1.0 day Systems Analyst/Consult. @ $800/day $ 1600
1.0 day Additional
staff @ $400/day $ 800
Total: $2400
If the systems development work
continues on this project, total cost will depend on what additional approach is taken. If the initial system can be used
without any modifications, we estimate the project cost to be $10000 to $12000. If modifications are necessary, a revised
cost estimate will be submitted.
At the end of the systems analysis phase, we will define in detail any problems, if any that may exist with the new system
and assess the full capability of the new system. We will propose a solution that will allow the faculty to learn the new
system’s operability and basic maintenance.
EXPECTED BENEFITS
Sales will increase due to the enticement of new customers wanting to use the internet service after
ordering a meal in and around the restaurant premises.
